SECTION 1.
Sir F. Bertie to Sir Edward Grey.~(Received October 10.)
Paris, October 9, 1908. M. PICHON asked me this morning to ascertain the intentions of His Majesty's Government in regard to the British troops at Tien-tsin. He had been informed that the Japanese Government were about to reduce the number of their troops to three companies, about from 400 to 450 men. He wishes to know what is the present number of the British detachment, and to what extent it will be diminished, supposing that His Majesty's Government propose to reduce it. He desires to have this information, so that the French Government may in this matter act in accord with His Majesty's Government.
I have, &c. (Signed) FRANCIS BERTIE.
